Love Hard And Live Long

I don’t know if it is just a coincidence but most of the patients I’ve consulted this month surprisingly were all heart related diseases. It’s funny because I have this feeling that as if they all collaborated and decided to celebrate Valentine’s Day in advanced.

Kidding aside, truly the case of hypertension and heart disease in our country is increasing. In as much as I wanted to write a blog about it, this time I decided to share to you an article from Reader’s Digest dated last February of 2009 which I think very timely and at the same time amusing in a good way.

According to this article, nothing gives the heart muscle a workout quite like love – in fact, researchers are now proving that love is the route to heart health. Women in happy marriage are much less likely to have heart attack risk factors than their love lorn sisters, while men who have sex two or more times a week halves their risk of cardiac arrest.

And this being Valentine’s Day month, couples may like to take note that even kissing is beneficial – it increases saliva production, which reduces the bacteria that cause gum disease (a proven contributor to heart disease) – while hugs can lower blood pressure and stimulate the release of bonding hormone, oxytocin.

So to all the lovebirds out there, love hard and live long! Happy Valentine’s Day to all of you!
