This is not the first time we have a pandemic on A(H1N1). Based on history, we had a case in 1918 where it nearly wiped out the human race. It killed more than 40 million people worldwide. Another two pandemics followed in 1950's and 1960's where the mortality reaches more than 10 million. It is true that this new virus is mild compared to the previous outbreaks but the risk is still there. WHO warned us that we have to watch out for the second wave of A(H1N1) because it is usually fatal and deadly.
As of June 9, 2009, there are about 94,512 cases and 431 deaths in 112 countries. In our country, out of 1,711 cases , we already have 3 deaths. The first one was a child, the second one was a student with asthma and the last one was an elderly with emphysema.
The clinical presentation of A(H1N1) is just like any other ordinary flu. Infected patient would present with fever, runny nose, sore throat, cough, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and lack of appetite. Suspected cases should self-quarantine for at least 10 days. For those who got infected, you are only allowed to socialize seven days after your fever subsided.
There are some rumors that is going around that this virus was intentionally released to cause panic worldwide. They say that the company who produces the anti-viral medicine is responsible for this outbreak. Granting it is true or hopefully not , all we have to do in preventing the spread of this infection is to wash our hands properly before using them for at least 20 seconds with soap and water or 70% alcohol. Try to practice how to cough and sneeze properly in public. They recommend using tissue papers instead of hanky in wiping our face, mouth or nose and dispose them properly. So these are just some of the preventive measures that we can do to fight this pandemic. Remember prevention is better than cure so all we have to do is go back to basic.
