Twitter is a free social networking and micro-blogging service that enables its users to send and read messages known as tweets. Tweets are text-based posts of up to 140 characters displayed on author's profile page and delivered to authors subscribers who are known as followers. Senders can restrict delivery to those in their circle of friends, or by default, allow open access. Users can send and receive tweets via tweeter website, short message service (SMS) or external applications. Since its creation in 2006 by Jack Dorsey, Twitter has gained notability and popularity worldwide. It is sometimes described as SMS of the internet.
Twitter is ranked as one of the 50 most popular website worldwide by Alexa's web traffic analysis. Although estimates of the number of daily users vary because the company does not release the number of active accounts, a February 2009 Complete.com blog entry ranked Twitter as the third most used social network based on their count of 6 million unique monthly visitors and 55 million monthly visits. In March 2009, a Nielsen.com blog ranked Twitter as the fastest-growing site in the Member Communities category for February 2009.
Out of curiosity, I made my Twitter account few days ago and frankly speaking, I'm a little bit disappointed. I was expecting that Twitter is just like Facebook where you can have a lively interaction with other subscribers. But I was wrong because in Twitter you cannot play poker or send gifts to other followers. You can't even upload your pictures unless you log in again to Twitpics. Well, if you're the type of person who wants an active social networking, I think Twitter is not for you.
For me, the only advantage of Twitter over Facebook is that you can tweet international celebrities like Kobe Bryant and Arnold Schwarzenegger. You can even follow their daily activities and post a comment on their Twitpics. But make sure that the account you're following was verified by the website because there are a lot of twitters who post as celebrities, and later only to find out that they are not, after following them for several months. I guess that's the other downside of Twitter. So if you only want to know the whereabouts of you favorite celebrities and you are satisfied by just posting a comment on the internet without expecting a reply, I guess Twitter is worth a try.
