Avatar: More Than Just A Science Fiction Movie

Two weeks ago, I watched Avatar at Imax in Mall of Asia together with some of my friends. It cost me 450 pesos but I can honestly say that it was worth it. Actually it was not my first time to watch movie at Imax but what made it unforgettable was the movie itself.

At first, I was a little bit hesitant to watch Avatar since I’m not a science fiction guy. However, what made me think twice were the review of the movie which was good and I find the synopsis of the movie very interesting.

The movie is about the group of corporate-military entity trying to find this very expensive stone, Unobtanium, which happened to be located under a giant tree where the Na’vi, the indigenous population of Pandora, a moon of planet Polyphemus, some 4.3 light years away from Earth, is living. They sent one of their men, Jake, to spy on the Na’vi by disguising as one of them by linking to his Avatar. As the time passes by, Mr. Selfridge, head of the operation and Col. Quaritch, head of the security became impatient since for several months, Jake and his Avatar didn’t give them any information about the stone and to make the situation worst is that Jake fell in love with Neytiri, the daughter of the king of the Na’vi and because of this he also realized that their plan of getting hold of the stone would not only affect his relationship with her but would also destroy their habitat.

At a glance, like everybody else, we would think that Avatar is about the love story of Jake and Neytiri and how they overcome their adversities. Yes it is partly true but personally I think what made this film different from other love story other than it's also a science fiction movie is that Avatar inspired all of us to fight for what we believe in even to the point of giving up everything just like what Jake did for Neytiri.

Indeed, Avatar proved that science fiction movie is not all about effects but rather, it can also tell an inspiring story about love and sacrifices. I guess, Avatar is a science fiction movie with a heart.
